Key West Style:
A "Key West Style" home is a
home that adheres to Florida's waterfront traditions
in style and functionality. These coastal homes
were built to withstand warm Florida summers, rainy and
windy tropical seasons, and in the days before air-conditioning,
to take every advantage of coastal breezes. They
have large porches, open floor plans, and plenty of windows. Their
metal roofs are reminiscent of the earlier tin roofs
commonly used in Florida homes. Light colors inside
and out, help to blend with the surrounding sun, sand,
water, and tropical foliage found in these coastal areas. Weathered
or light colored wood flooring and cabinetry is common
in these homes. Today, some of the "Key West
Style" features such as shutters and cupolas serve
a purely architectural purpose however, this beautiful
home building style still makes one feel as if they are
on a permanent Florida vacation.
